Seth Campbell: Down-ballot drama: other races will impact the election [View all]

As we continue to debate the 2024 Presidential Election and all the frills that go along with the contest, there are underlying factors that haven’t received much attention at all.

Of course, the matchup between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump garners the most attention and perhaps rightfully so, but control of the United States House of Representatives and Senate are also at stake this November. The down-ballot races throughout the country will help determine the direction of our nation moving forward.

There’s also a strange phenomenon occurring where down-ballot Republicans are struggling to keep pace with Trump. According to the Real Clear Politics averages of five swing states and their respective Senate races, Democrats lead by at least four points in each of the contests. And these leads have been stubbornly high since polling began.

Even when President Joe Biden was getting trounced in the polls, each of these
Democratic Senate candidates were comfortably defeating their Republican counterpart. Now that Harris has taken the mantle and is running several points better than Biden, these down-ballot races have only gotten better for Democrats.
