"When Whataburger has a better-functioning power outage map than Houston’s largest electricity provider, something is terribly wrong.

By now, Houstonians have set a pretty low bar for CenterPoint Energy. We all know that regardless of the disaster Mother Nature cooks up, be it a freeze, derecho or hurricane, power outages are likely and it’s a crapshoot whether you’ll be lucky enough to keep your lights on.

What we do expect from our power utility is transparency. Preparation. Resiliency. In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which tore through our city on Monday, knocking out power for more than 2 million Houstonians — the most since Hurricane Ike in 2008 — it appears that CenterPoint failed on all counts ... "
