Not sure I agree with the article in terms of being the major reason for her failures... In a state where hunting and hunting licenses are near sacrosanct, her being caught lying about her residency--which only underscored her carpetbagger status--really drove the first (and perhaps deepest) nail in her candidacy.
Most certainly there is a lot of homophobia in many areas of WY, but perhaps less than this article assumes... RETHUGS there are far more libertarian than in many places... It is not a well kept secret that the main hotel (for decades) where state legislators stay during session is owned by a prominent gay Cheyenne man--who is not at all closeted... Ditto many of the most (legislator-) frequented Cheyenne bars. Go figure...
David Weigel knows NOTHING about the West... He is merely spewing assumptions from the vantage point of his life-long East coast perspectives**. I posted a link to his article only because it does cite the most recent polling data in terms of how tremendous the current Enzi lead..
**Weigel was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. After moving to England in 1998 he graduated from the American Community School in Cobham, Surrey, in "the high Tory London suburbs"[13] of the London commuter belt, in 2000.[1][14] He moved to Chicago in 2000 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, with a double major in journalism and political science and a minor in history.[10][15] While at college, Weigel wrote for The Daily Northwestern and was editor-in-chief of the campus conservative newspaper Northwestern Chronicle.[1] He described his interests as including politics and far right and far left radicalism.[1] Weigel was mentioned in a 2006 New York Times article about bloggers who roomed together. At that time, he shared a house with fellow Reason.com writer Julian Sanchez that they had dubbed "Casa de Libertarios."[16] He presently lives in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC.[10][12]
