7. When I put in another drive and did a quick and dirty 7 install it read that drive just fine.

That's how I was able to save the data to an external drive.
Crystal dsik info, spin-rite and Seagate drive test passed the drive just fine.

now that I got 7 back on it, both C and D are there without a problem.
