3. I looked around in settings & I don't see a way to automatically open the new tab.

I assume you're right-clicking on links & selecting "Open link in new tab"?
The link opens in a new tab, & you have to click on the tab to see the page that loaded.

There are a couple "tab manager" extensions in the Chrome web store that allow you to use keyboard shortcuts to move left/right through tabs & organize open tabs in various ways, not sure if those would help you.
