Locking cells in formulas [View all]

Cannot remember how to lock in a cell in a formula. My excel is to old to get help from program.
Want to lock in the row for a calculation Like = sum a1+b1
=sum a2 +b1 and so on. I thought if i put an * before the 1 in b1 it would lock the cell but that's not right?
