Sad to say: CDs are basically dead. It's hard to buy new equip that uses them now. And 5 years from now it will be nearly impossible to find new readers. So you will want to get all your data off CD. How to do that? Get it all onto a single flash drive or single hard drive.

Back everything up. All drives die at some point. Make sure you have at least two copies of everything. Can use cloud backup like Carbonite, or get a second external hard drive to use as backup.

Computer suggestion: refurb Mac. They're expensive but they last a long time. And you can use Time Machine for backups.

Word processor: Microsoft Word ($$) or Mac Pages ($) or Google Docs (free but online).

External keyboard: yes you can attach external keyboard/mouse to a Mac laptop. And Mac minis are still sold if you want to get a newer Mac Mini.
