1. Could be at the end of its life span older batteries generate more heat while charging, but

didn't apple offer to replace these for free?

/edit they made it 'nearly' free for the 6 NOT the 5, due to the software slowdown fiasco more info

It is relative easy to replace these yourself and you can get a kit with the tools on youtube
