1. So, I got a new computer and this still is happening

except that now I have a new office program so I am told that it cannot be opened.

As a new owner I contacted Apple support and... in the System Preferences, in the Users icon there is a tab Login Items and here it was, open Excel. Don't know how it got it but selecting it and the - sign solved it.
