3. If you are on limited memory (like my MBA) consider a lightweight distro.

Lost some typing so here’s the short list:
Kubuntu and friends (lubuntu, xubuntu), xfce, knoppix (I like knoppix) and Linux Mint. I ran mint on a lot of old intel boxes.
Bodhi gets good reviews.

Good luck. Devil’s only in the details, as always.

I have lots of apps that are mac-like. In fact, most of my apps on mac are open source, given that I don’t like to pay for software.
