3. I use the Activity Monitor's Disk Usage function from the top menu.

From the top menu bar, click Go, then when the drop down window appears, go to Utilities and then click on Activity Monitor.

When the window opens up, it will give you these options: CPU, System Memory, Disk Activity, Disk Usage and Network.

Pick Disk Usage and it will show you what you have as a pie graph with available and free space in gig and also bytes. I keep Activity Monitor in the Dock so that I can skip the other steps.
