5. Here is a setup for Ubuntu 10.04, should be similar for you.

From the "System" menu select "Preferences" then go down and click on "Network Connections." From that popup click on "Wired" and then on "Auto Ethernet."

Then click on "Edit" on the right. From that popup click on "Connect automatically." MAC address is blank. For MTU automatic is selected.

Then click on 802.1x Security. Box is not checked. Then, click on "IPv4 Setting." The Method selected is Automatic (DHCP). DHCP client ID is blank.

Click on IPv6 Settings. Set for Ignore. IPv6 is not used everyplace yet, so IMO leave IPv6 Setting as Ignore.
