Two semi-random thoughts ...

1) it might be nice to get him a Raspberry-Pi and learn a little about the hardware too. Check out:

2) the above points to 'A Byte of Python' for beginners. Which is online, available to buy in printed form, and
also as a PDF that can be downloaded.

Python is an excellent modern language for beginners and grey-beards both.
