WASHINGTON — — First lady Michelle Obama will be the guest of honor at a White House dance party next month when she turns "50 and fabulous," as she put it recently.

Her Jan. 17 birthday represents a personal milestone and a public moment to take stock of the Chicago native who has billed herself as the mom-in-chief, has established herself as a national spokeswoman for fitness and has earned consistently high marks in the polls, despite criticism from both the right and the left.

The White House has been sending out save-the-date emails for a Jan. 18 gala dubbed "Snacks & Sips & Dancing & Dessert," sources told the Tribune.

Guests are being told: Wear comfortable shoes, eat before you come and practice your dance moves. Who's invited and who'll entertain remain under wraps.

Obama hinted about her birthday plans during a Dec. 16 visit to a children's hospital, when a fellow Capricorn asked her about her big day. "It might involve some dancing," she told the girl. "A little Dougie."
