Photographer Liz Belfor has shot many ceremonies for same-sex couples, like this one pictured above on Kauais Eastside. Diana Gardner, former president of Kauai Wedding Professionals Association, said the industry got a slight bump since last years legalization of civil unions in Hawaii. Last week, she launched a new business, Engayged Hawaii, catering exclusevily to same-sex couples.
LIHUE With the Obama administration urging the Supreme Court to strike down Californias ban on gay marriage, the case could have sweeping implications for the right of same-sex couples to wed.
Its an important issue for all people, said U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, on a recent visit to Kauai.
While California wont have a direct impact for same-sex couples in Hawaii, it potentially opens the door to overturning the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, which allows marriage to be governed by states.
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Proposition 8 case Mar. 26.
A day later, the justices will hear arguments on another gay marriage case, this one involving provisions of DOMA.
