our train was delayed 9 hours before reaching us in Alpine, Tx where we boarded at 4AM. Because it was so late, instead of going all the way to New Orleans, Amtrak decided to terminate it in San Antonio and bus everyone to the remaining stops. Knowing we wouldn't survive an overnight 16 hour bus ride, we decided to stay in San Antonio for 2 nights until the next train came through.

We had a great time there as, when we arrived, Amtrak had lost so much time that we got to see live the 1836 Alamo battle and we saw the good guys beat the Texans. We watched from our hotel while enjoying free popcorn and margaritas provided by the nearby "La Casa de No Gringo" restaurant.
