As far as Presidentials, Massachusetts went for war hero Ike twice, then Reagan once or twice. Other than that, our electoral votes have been going for the Democratic nominee for a long time.

Apparently, campaigns actually drill down to anywhere from 8 to 100 purple counties, not purple states, that will swing the election.

I heard Brian Williams say 8 when he was on the Daily Show, but I googled and got different numbers. Maybe it depends on which article you read. But I never saw a number over 100.

Just think about the billions in hard and soft money that will get spent by two people in 2016 and then think it matters only in 5 to 100 counties.
