The phenomenon of the angry white male has been widely credited with the profound shift to the right in Congress since the 1994 congressional elections, but the anger and anxiety go beyond the white male. Millions of Americans – male and female, white and people of color, from the upper middle class to the poor – are apprehensive about their social and economic well-being, their personal safety, and their ability to take care of themselves and their family members in an environment in which little seems secure. Widespread alienation from traditional political leaders and from the political process is clearly evident: People all over the country are participating in the increasingly harsh discourse of talk radio as well as other forms of popular culture. Significant numbers of Americans are forming themselves into armed militias.
