5. Just don't try to time the market.

Yes, it goes up and it goes down but the long term trend is up. If you really do think there will be a downturn in the near future, just don't invest everything all at once. And if there is a downturn, don't start selling. That big hit we had last March simply didn't last that long. I know that any number of people here decided that when Trump was elected the market would surely crash and they sold everything. And missed out on good returns.

Another thing to look at would be investing in stocks that pay dividends.
