2. In other news, China risks exploding electrolyzers if they are powered by so called "renewable energy."

While so called "Green Hydrogen" is a trivial bait and switch scam designed to distract from the reality that in China, hydrogen is made from coal, the reality is that even the Potemkin electrolyzers built for display purposes are pretty damned dangerous:

World's largest green hydrogen project 'has major problems due to its Chinese electrolysers': BNEF

And herein are links to Chinese scientists, as opposed to fossil fuel greenwashers talking about what might be involved if everything works out just great - which it has no record of doing - how "green hydrogen" might be available "by 2060."

Plans for "Green" Hydrogen Transition in China: An Amusing Paper Involving Doubly Wasteful Energy Storage.

The caption refers to the supplemental data for the paper, which is free to access and can be found here: Environmental Science & Technology 2024 58 (30), 13263-13272 supplemental data.

Tables S9, S10, and S11 offer soothsaying about various "scenarios" - "scenario" being the IEA terms for soothsaying based on a number of "if" statements, usually involving super optimistic statements about so called "renewable energy" despite the fact that the already trillion dollar expenditures on this lipstick on the fossil fuel pig has done effectively nothing to address extreme global heating, since under the expenditures the rate of extreme global heating is accelerating, not decelerating despite these expenditures.

Only the values from the entry for 2020 are likely to be based on actual data beyond soothsaying. For convenience, I'll produce them here from table S9:

BG refers to biogas reforming, CG, to coal reforming, SMR, steam methane reforming, natural gas reforming, and EXT refers to industrial byproducts, presumably oil refining. Based on the data for 2020, which is probably the most accurate, in "percent talk" that advocates of so called "renewable energy" like to use to obscure its uselessness, 98.88% of the hydrogen used to power those Chinese devices in the ads posted here was generated by the use of dangerous fossil fuels, accompanied by exergy destruction. Solar energy produced 0.3%, hydro, 0.8%.

Bold added.

Apparently, to prevent the risk of explosions, they want to put batteries in the line to waste even more energy and destroy even more exergy.

Right now, with the planet in flames because of bad thinking pushed by cheap dishonest marketing by fossil fuel interests, including but not limited to those rebranding fossil fuels as "hydrogen," the planet is in flames where it's desiccated by heat or drowned where extreme weather strikes, all because fossil fuel interests have been so successfully slick at selling their interests by, for example, rebranding fossil fuels as "hydrogen."

Regrettably, we live in the age of the lie, the chief practitioners of the "art" - if we call it an "art" - being the candidates put forth by the Republican party but the general acceptability of "big lies" is an unfortunate outgrowth of this moral disaster.

Nobody, absolutely nobody, is worried about "falling behind" on electrolyzers, since they remain expensive and, being powered by electricity largely powered by the combustion of dangerous fossil fuels, very dirty as well, since electricity is a thermodynamically degraded form of energy, and thus, China continues to make hydrogen by the steam reforming of coal, being the world's largest, by far, user of coal for this purpose. The rest of the world relies largely on the steam reforming of dangerous natural gas, having better access to it, or reforming oil residues in petroleum refineries.

If the Chinese want to squander money to pretend that they are making hydrogen with so called "renewable energy," money will be better spent elsewhere by embracing clean technology, not wasteful junk.
