1. Trash has to go somewhere.

Fiji buries a lot of it in informal landfills.

Some European nations incinerate their garbage for power but this has to be very tightly regulated. If it's not trash and biomass incinerators can be very dirty. Nations like Denmark and Sweden claim to do it cleanly but the record in other places, including the U.S.A., is not good. It's too easy for unscrupulous operators to cheat, even divert funds intended for pollution control to their own pockets.
