Only the Penn line, the old Pennsylvania Railroad line between Baltimore and Washington, DC, is electrified.

The Camden line, the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line between Baltimore and DC, is not electrified. The Brunswick line, which runs from DC out to Martinsburg, WV, on another old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line, is also not electrified.

The electrics MARC has now are getting up in years. The replacement locomotives will be able to run system-wide. Also, if MARC ever coordinates with Virginia's VRE on through trains, the new locomotives could keep running south of DC
