3. Two ships left Norfolk at the same time.

My destroyer, the USS Dahlgren, & the unarmed research ship USS Liberty were at the same pier in '67. My ship shoved off for the Panama Canal & on to carrier support plus search & rescue operations at Yankee Station in Vietnam's Tonkin Gulf for combat deployment. The USS Liberty--seemingly luckier--went to join the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. When the 6-Day War broke out, the unarmed Liberty was in International Waters, 100 miles from Gaza, flying the US Flag in broad daylight. That's when IDF jets attacked repeatedly, nearly sinking her, then joined torpedo boats in machine-gunning sailors in the water--many injured--who had abandoned ship, a war crime.
My ship, the Dahlgren returned from its Vietnam mission with no casualties. The Liberty meanwhile lost 34 killed & 171 injured, plus loss of the ship. The attack on her was never explained.
