ie. various stories experiences and what is common in them in all the variety, there are lot's of "species" with different qualities. The "grays" are usually experienced and described as very rational, "objective" and "scientific". The "grays" are also usually perceived to be the species involved with child kidnapping (especially older stories about "elves&quot , hybrid breeding etc. This could represent scientific etc. interest in human emotions.

In that case it could be also that they are partly or fully just subconscious symbols of the rational aspect of human minds.
