2. This kind of coverage really annoys me.

Dude has been arrested for drugs. He's a drug dealer, and they position THAT part like it's the bad thing, or that it's the root cause of the homophobia, or some common comorbidity.

The drugs don't make him homophobic, and the drugs don't make him a bad person. The homophobia makes him a bad person. The harassment makes him a bad person. Why is drug abuse in the headline if the story is about his harassment of not only the gay couple but also the rest of the community. The problem isn't that he's a drug abuser, it's that he's an abuser.

It's like they felt like they needed to make him sound worse because he's a drug dealer than he already sounded just for being a homophobic abuser.
