but the raw milk nuts have been out there forever, I can remember health food stores getting flak for not selling it back in the 60s and 70s because public health laws against it were in place. The best they could do is find a small dairy operation where the farmer would keep a few gallons aside for customers who acted like they were doing drug deals when they bought it.

Except for their extreme sex phobia, the Shakers were pretty sensible people. Were they around now, I'd fully expect them to pasteurize their milk but not homogenize it, pulling the cream off the top for butter production.
