In 2024, Florida reported
83 confirmed cases of Vibrio vulnificus, almost doubling the
46 cases seen in 2023.
17 deaths have been attributed to the bacterium this year compared to
11 in 2023.
The recent spike in cases is linked to two powerful hurricanesHurricane Helene and Hurricane Miltonwhich battered Florida with heavy rainfall and flooding. These conditions create ideal environments for Vibrio vulnificus to thrive in warm, brackish, and saltwater areas.
The Florida Department of Health has identified counties with elevated cases, including Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Lee, Pasco, Pinellas, and Sarasota.
Fortunately, Disney World is located in Orange and Osceola Counties, where Vibrio vulnificus cases remain rare.
According to the CDC, this bacteria can enter a human through an open wound or by consuming seafood contaminated with Vibrio vulnificus.
Necrotizing fasciitis can result in life-long complications from loss of limbs or severe scarring due to surgically removing infected tissue. Even with treatment, up to 1 in 5 people died from the infection.
Global warming has been linked to the increase in flesh-eating bacteria in several states.
