Scientists say eating more of this cheese could help your memory -- yes, really [View all]

If you're a cheese-lover like I am, I've got gouda news (I couldn't resist!). According to new research published in Neurology, our love of cheddar, brie, and gouda might actually be doing our brains a favor. A large Swedish study followed nearly 28,000 people for 25 years and found that those who ate more high-fat cheese had a 13% lower risk of developing dementia compared to people who barely touched the stuff. (Score. I knew there was a reason I lived in Wisconsin!)

The sweet spot? About 50 grams daily — roughly two slices of cheddar or half a cup of shredded cheese. Those who met this threshold were less likely to develop dementia than people consuming less than 15 grams per day. The benefits were even more pronounced for vascular dementia, with a 29% reduction in risk.

Heavy cream lovers got good news, too. People who consumed at least 20 grams (about 1.4 tablespoons) of high-fat cream daily had a 16% lower risk of dementia than those who skipped it entirely. (And here I've been trying to limit heavy cream in my coffee to Sundays. Silly me.)

Before you start chugging milk and slathering butter on everything, here's the catch: the protective effect only showed up with high-fat cheese and cream. Low-fat dairy products, milk, butter, and fermented options like yogurt showed no association with reduced dementia risk.
