because their answer to every stressor is drug and alcohol abuse.

I disagree with that, for myself. My emotional development stopped a long time before I ever started drinking.
In my younger years, I was what you might charitably call, "young for my age." IOW, when I was 18 I had the
emotional maturity of an 11 or 12 year old.

I'm also an adult child of an alcoholic, so I think that accounts for it.
