I find it unsettling that the mentally ill are such a boogeyman recently, but I find encouragement in the fact that when you ask mental health professionals, they can separate their politics from their profession and provide unbiased information. For instance, when the MD Task Force on guns and the mentally ill reported that "significant mental illness" by itself is a weak indicator of risk for violence, and that comorbidity with substance abuse is a far more telling sign. Real answers can lead to real solutions, if the politicians will ever get their heads out of their asses. Here's hopin'.
