1. For the most part, I consider recipes to be 'suggestions'

The only ones I follow semi-closely are for dry ingredients in baked goods. Once I get the dough/batter done, I use my imagination when it comes to additional ingredients. Actually, my whole family does the same thing. Taste - add something - taste - think of something else to add.

My former brother in law is just the opposite. He follows recipes with an exactness that drives the rest of us crazy.
