of their allergies for understandable reasons... but that leaves them assuming what exactly is causing their reaction.

I know many a veterinarian who has discovered an occasional reaction to a specific animal or two--not even the entire breed or species. Shar Peis come to mind on that score and certain long-haired cats housed together (likewise rabbits in a colony)/

So, yes. There are a lot of issues regarding hair or dander-related pet allergies that are not fully understood.
