4. Well, there are way worse things than being "for the birds"

My daughter raised chickens in 4-H way back in the last millennium and it was something. They came in the mail and stayed in a big box in the living room with a light bulb to keep them warm while they grew their feathers. My mom thought I was crazy, too.

Daughter had one huge wicked rooster who would sneak up on me when I was pegging out the laundry and try to rake my legs with his spurs. The second time he drew blood I gave him to a co-worker who turned him into chicken dinner for his family. No regrets. Hens don’t need a rooster to lay eggs, but without his protection we did lose some eggs to a king snake and raccoon. A small price to pay for getting shed of that wicked rooster. And those fresh eggs with yolks almost orange, instead of pale yellow…yum.
