The pain will show in their eyes... and you will know that it is time.
You'll still argue with yourself, but if you listen to your gut and look deeply in his eyes, you'll know. Hubby and I had arguments when it came time for our Border Collie. We went back and forth for a week, but when I saw him try to get on the couch the last time and saw his entire back end collapse and heard him whimper, I knew the time was right then. He'd been too good a friend to let him suffer any longer. To his credit, hubby stopped arguing and agreed with me, although it tore the both of us apart. The only thing I regret is that the vet led us out of the room, rather than letting us stay there with him. I think he thought it'd be easier on us, but to this day I feel regret and kick myself for not being less emotional and more of an advocate. I'd have given anything to have even 5 more minutes with him.
