The same happened in Canada and Australia - cultures were assimilated by force, children removed from their families (Stolen Generations) and their indigenous roots destroyed. I believe in the 21st century, where political correctness has top priority in the media etc., indigenous languages need to be preserved and revived.

In New Zealand, for example, many native language words are integrated into everyday vocabulary and Maori language is taught at school. The education system would need to be reformed and, of course, the media also play an important role.
