For the most part, I find that it is just as economical to buy locally, once you consider shipping and background check costs, if you're willing to shop around a bit. I am, however, in a pretty gun-friendly town, so there's enough local gun stores that there is some competition to keep prices under control. I realize that's not the case for everyone...
