Journalist Andrea Mitchell on fighting to cover big stories [View all]

NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell, who’s celebrating her 40th anniversary with the network, has had to fight to cover big stories.

Mitchell recounted at a 92nd Street Y talk that after repeatedly being denied the chance to cover the nuclear-reactor accident at the Three Mile Island plant in 1979 — despite being the network’s energy reporter — she marched into the bureau chief’s office and asked for an explanation.

“He said, ‘Because you’re of child-bearing age, I don’t want to expose you to radiation.’

I said, ‘Has it ever occurred to you that men’s balls are as vulnerable to radiation as women’s ovaries?’”

Mitchell was assigned the next day.
