I get that people see the phenomenon of someone who says inflammatory statements as a new thing, he says. I grew up in the South. I covered Edwin Edwards. (Baquet was a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune when a candidate for Louisiana governor told him famously: Only way I lose this election is if Im caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy.)
