The GOP have never argued they have public opinion on their side with regard to opposition to returning tax rates for the high income earners to Clinton era rates. As far as who - outside the group who will personally benefit from extending the temporary Bush tax cuts for the higher income groups - they are responding to is Grover Norquist.
I have never heard the GOP say that
the public is behind them on this issue . No doubt that is because numerous polls have shown about 2/3rds of the public are in favor of NOT extending the Bush tax cuts for the higher income groups (and even a majority of Republicans are not in favor of extending tax cut for the high income groups)... oh, but I said that in the OP didn't I? Why would I think repeating this for you would have any impression?
Woodruff and the entire PBS Newshour staff are possibly suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Living in fear of more cuts from the Rapaciuous Right, they are either consciously lieing for them or have come to identify with their tormentors and have convinced themselves they believe the Republican Propaganda no doubt supplied to them by courier from the GOP.
