6. My nephew grew up in the rural Mid-South.

There were not a lot of black folks where he lived. I was with him, at a big city zoo, the first time he ever saw a black child. His mouth went wide open, and his eyes were huge. He didn't make a scene or anything, just looked amazed.

As we walked on, my sister told me that he knew some black grown-ups, but he must not have known that they came in his size. He seemed more than okay with that knowledge.
