The British promised them their freedom so some crossed over while others fought for independence (when given the chance by slave owners) and others remained on the side lines.

African American veterans served with distinction in all of our wars and have earned their place in our society through payment in blood, life and limb even in the face of active, violent, white resistance. I'm proud to have served with many and I salute them all.
