In the case of our truck, the manufacturer made out.

In the case of our car, we made out. Had to get the transmission and engine replaced, so it paid for itself and then some.

Buy extended warranty with a $100 deductible to cut the costs. Anything less than $100, you're paying out of pocket anyway or its a wear item and not covered under the extended warranty.
