April is the height of the migratory bird season on the Texas coast. Smith Oaks is about an hour up the coast from Galveston where Featherfest is a major birding event every year. www.galvestonfeatherfest.com

Among many other field trips offered is a trip to High Island (home of Smith Oaks) but you have to get up at 4 AM to catch the Bolivar Ferry on the tour bus. It's worth it.

If you are into photography I highly recommend any field trip offered by Tim Timmis, engineer as a day job and spectacular photographer. https://www.timtimmis.com/
