Samuel, who was scheduled to count $15.86 million against the cap with a $15.4 million option bonus due on March 22.

Before the trade, the 49ers had $50.7 million salary cap space, the 12th-most in the NFL. That figure will now fall to about $35 million.

Don't forget that he pushed long snapper Taybor Pepper in the throat on the sideline during a win at Tampa Bay in November. In December, a day after a win over the Bears, Samuel said on social media that a slump in which he’d managed just 97 total yards in his previous four games was due to a lack of targets. And then in December Samuel followed his public venting by gaining just 19 total yards and dropping a would-be, 29-yard touchdown pass in a 12-6 loss to the Rams that essentially ended the 49ers’ playoff hopes in a 6-11 season.

It was time.
