Former NFL star Junior Seau found dead of apparent suicide [View all]

NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead of an apparent suicide in his home in Oceanside, Calif., on Wednesday morning. He was 43.

Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy announced in a news conference on Wednesday afternoon that Seau’s girlfriend reported finding him unconscious with a gunshot wound to the chest. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Rumors of Seau’s suicide circulated all morning, breaking first on TMZ before being confirmed by the police. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that a 911 call reporting a possible suicide was made to police at 10 a.m. Shortly afterward, San Diego Chargers chaplain Shawn Mitchell said that he was informed of Seau’s passing.

Mitchell also told ABCNews.com that Seau died of a “self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.” If this is true, Seau would be the second former NFL player to take his life in this manner in the past two years.

I have an autographed photo by him.. Even though he was never on any of my favorite teams, I really liked and respected him as a NFL player. I don't know if anyone ever told him to get help, if he was having problems..Football can take its toll, but this guy was a home town hero..and when his time in the NFL was over...I guess that is a difficult thing to walk away from. This was a shock to me...I know he inspired many future players to do their best.
