Personally, I think that missing ingredient is in the stands during most (but in no way all) MLS matches. I actually felt bad for Dallas last year (and I'm originally from Houston, I fucking hate Dallas) watching some of their games in front of what looked like a couple of hundred people. Then you watch DC play in a deserted RFK stadium and it's just sad.

Then again, Seattle, Philly, Kansas City, Portland, Vancouver...they draw huge crowds with fantastic atmosphere. Houston is opening a GORGEOUS new stadium this year that will draw crowds.

Say what you will about those cities/clubs, their support in the stands makes the on-field product better.
