4. I prefer zippered luggage

Unlike a latch, the stress is spread through the entire closure.

I would imagine that any strap of nylon webbing and a cinch would be fine.

The thing is, it has to be relatively easy to open and close if the bag is pulled for TSA manual inspection.

It also provides something for the luggage to get hung up on during handling, though.

The thing about overpacking is, yes, you have to leave room outbound if you expect to pick up stuff while you are away. But, really, I've been around the world in one smallish suitcase and carry-on, and still came back with stuff I didn't wear.

Things like quick-drying underwear and socks can be washed in a sink and hung up overnight. Also, clothing makes for great souvenirs. If you are going somewhere chilly, for example, instead of packing three sweaters, think about maybe picking one up when you get there. Every time you wear that sweater after you get home, you'll be reminded of the trip.
