A sad story [View all]

Yesterday, my wife and I were sailing north in the Intracoastal Waterway near Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. When we approached the Socastee Swing Bridge, we radioed the bridge tender to request an opening so our sailboat’s 41-foot tall mast could transit.

As usual, the tender was friendly and accommodating and we zipped along on our way.

Later in the afternoon, when we arrived at a marina, the dock master told us we were fortunate to have gotten past the bridge because there had been an accident and the bridge was closed indefinitely. Later, I found that a young man, who likely had a seizure (according to his family), lost control of his car and went off the bridge and into the canal killing him.

Such a terrible accident! I feel for the man and his family. So sad.
