Combine this new requirement with the alarming number of tourists who are routinely kidnapped at gunpoint and then ushered to ATM machines where tourists empty out their accounts for the kidnappers. I visited Rio for 10 days in 1987 and thought it was an incredibly beautiful and interesting place, and crime was pretty bad even then. It’s only gotten worse from what I’ve read. No thanks.
