Buddhism doesnt really depend on the existence of an historical Buddha. The teachings of Buddhism can be evaluated and followed independently of that.
The standard christian theology requires an historical jesus to perform his ritual sacrifice. It is essential to the religion.
There are christians who dont care about that nonsense and just follow the teachings, some of which are basic be a good human stuff. And for them it doesnt matter.
